Baltijsk-Mukran ferry line commences operation
Ferry connection between the German port of Mukran and the Russian port of Baltijsk in the Kaliningrad exclave is open, press center of the Ministry of Transport reports. The first ferry with Russian cargo has arrived today to Mukran from Baltijsk. Before the end of the year Baltijsk-Mukran ferry line is to be open formotorcars. From 2007 after finalization of technical and technological works in German port railway ferry line Ust-Luga - Baltijsk – German ports is to start full-scale operation. Mukran is the last point of Ust-Luga - Baltijsk – German ports railway ferry line. Technological facilities of the Mukran port developed 20 years ago were designed for handling of 5 million tons of cargo annually. Currently, the port handles 100 thou tons per year. Ust-Luga - Baltijsk – German ports railway ferry line is to ensure full load of the port.
