From January to July, container cargo handled by the eastern Chinese port of Jiangyin soared 188.7 per cent over the same period in 2006 to an all-time-high volume of 169,100 TEUs, Xinhua reports.
The port's total cargo volume also set a new record by rising 22.9 per cent to 41.82 million tons.
The report said the surge was a result of the port of Jiangyin's expanded capacity. Since the beginning of this year, the port has built seven berths bringing an extra capacity of over 3 million tons and has launched container shipping service to Korea and Japan. The port now has 27 berths and 28 shipping lines in operation.
