Hapag Lloyd’s container ship Heidelberg Express has been in collision with the Tsakos Group-owned Liberian-flag container ship Yerotsakos. The accident caused minor structural damage to both vessels. According to a US Coast Guard statement German-flag, 2803 TEU, 1989-built Heidelberg Express experienced a loss of power when travelling outbound at mile marker 57 along the Lower Mississippi River. Both anchors were let go in an attempt to stop the vessel but it hit the 1993-built, 69,220 dwt Tsakos bulk carrier which was alongside its berth with cargo of iron ore. The USCG says: “There were no reports of injuries or pollution at the time of the incident and the waterway remains open and unrestricted. Investigators from Coast Guard Sector New Orleans are on scene to investigate the cause of the collision.”
