Lambert's Point Docks dredged to accommodate bigger ships

Lambert's Point Docks, one of Virginia's key breakbulk marine terminals, has completed dredging operations enabling it to handle ships with a draft up to 36 feet at the north side of Pier P. According to general superintendent Corine Barbour, the dredging creates opportunities for Lambert's Point Docks to market the terminal to vessels carrying more cargo. “We are pleased to have the capacity to attract some of the steamship lines that have had to discharge at other ports due to our depth restrictions,” said Barbour. A subsidiary of Norfolk Southern Corp, Lambert's Point Docks in Norfolk, Virginia is situated on one of the East Coast's natural deepwater harbours. The 1,200 feet of berthing space at LPD is accessed via the 45-foot-deep Elizabeth River, which is two hours sailing time from the open sea. Encompassing 117 acres with 1.2 million sq.ft of covered warehouse storage space and outdoor acreage, Lambert's Point Docks’ two finger piers can accommodate six vessels or as many as four panamax vessels simultaneously. Lambert's Point Docks also offers significant rail storage capacity, in addition to an extensive laydown area.
