Large oil spill reported in Urals

An oil pipeline that burst in the Chelyabinsk Region in Russia's Urals has spilled crude over an area of 5,500 square meters, a local emergencies ministry official said Tuesday according to RIA Novosti.

The official said that about 400 cubic meters of oil were released early on Monday when a landslide damaged a pipeline section near the village of Berdyaush, about 75 miles east of the regional center, Chelyabinsk.

The oil spill extends to the bank of the Bolshaya Satka River.

A team of 141 workers and 41 vehicles are taking part in the cleanup operation. The ministry said the spill has been contained, and 25 cubic meters of oil have been collected at the site.

The source said the cleanup should be completed by October 28.
