Latvia to introduce emergency situation schedule at Russian border from November 1

Extreme congestion of trucks at Latvian side of Russia-Latvia border caused the Council of Latvia’s Ludzen district to introduce the emergency situation schedule from November 1, Yuris Dombrovskis, chairman of regional council has told to Latviam radio, IA REGNUM reports. The congestion of trucks is still growing at the border checkpoint of Terekhovo: on October 29 there were over 800 trucks waiting. According to Dombrovskis, it entails significant problems to be solved by local authorities: traffic safety, unauthorized waste dumps at the road-sides, hindrance to passenger transportation. Representatives of municipal authorities, border services as well as drivers share the opinion that the government has to find a solution or the situation is to worsen even since in winter the way needs to be cleared. Currently the drivers have to wait for about two-three days at the checkpoint.
