Work on new Mumbai Port Trust terminal to begin by March

Mumbai Port Trust has begun the year with a plan to start construction work by March on its INR1.2 billion (US$30.5 million) offshore container terminal, reported the Press Trust of India.
"The consortium, led by Gammon India, awarded the offshore container terminal project, is expected to achieve financial closure in the next few weeks with construction to start by March with completion set for 2010," said Mumbai Port Trust deputy chairman Ashok Kumar Bal said.
Construction of the offshore container terminal would add 12 million tonnes capacity to the port. The terminal has been awarded on a build, operate, transfer (BOT) basis for 30 years. "Work on the chemical jetty would begin by April or May,'' he said. The port plans to redevelop three harbour wall berths to enable it to receive deep-drafted cargo vessels.
