Throughput of Klaipeda port up 16% in 2007 to 27.35 million tonnes

In 2007, throughput of Klaipeda port grew by 16%, year-on-year, to 27.35 million tonnes, the port’s press center reports. The highest growth rates were demonstrated in the sector timber transshipment (+50.4%), containers (+43.9% in terms of tonnage), agricultural goods (+39.7 %), loose fertilizers (+34.7%) and liquid fertilizers (+33.8%). Transshipment of oil products totaled 7.14 million tonnes (+5.4%). Container turnover grew by 38.8% (TEU), while transshipment of ro-ro cargo grew by 7%. Total number of passengers entering the port by ferry grew by 18.7 %, year-on-year, to 285,200.

In December 2007, throughput of the port of Klipeda climbed 15.5%, year-on-year. Transshipment of liquid bulk cargo grew by 42.4% being driven by a 30-percent growth in loading of oil products (from 458,000 tonnes in December 2006 to 592,500 in December 2007) and by a doubled transshipment of liquid fertilizers (from 85,300 tonnes in December 2006 to 178,800 tonnes in December 2007).

In December, transshipment of loose fertilizers grew by 13.7% to 501,200 tonnes, agricultural goods – up 86.0% to 45,200 tonnes).

The growth in transshipment of general cargo was driven by a 23.6-percent growth in loading of containers (from 225,700 tonnes in December 2006 to 278,900 tonnes in December 2007) and timber (from 46,300 tonnes in December 2006 to 73,000 tonnes in December 2007, a 57.7-percent growth).
