Deep-water Danube-Black Sea Canal will start operation by the end of 2008, Iosif Vinski, Ukraine’s Minister of Transport and Communications announced according to Gazeta.Ru. According to Mr. Vinski, the shipping at the canal was arranged in a wrong way. “Specialists confirm that the work was carried out incorrectly from technological point of view,” he said. In particular, the canal was deepened without dam construction, which caused frequent flooding of the canal. “It was an endless process and waste of money,” Mr. Vinski said. Thus, according to the Minister, the dam is to be built first and then the canal is to be cleared.
