Oleg Mitvol, deputy head of Russia's Federal Service for Natural Resources Oversight (Rosprirodnadzor), has tendered his resignation on his own initiative, ITAR-TASS reported Friday according to Prime-Tass.
The resignation was submitted Friday to Natural Resources Minister Yury Trutnev, whose ministry supervises the service.
Rinat Gizatulin, a spokesperson for the Natural Resources Ministry, told ITAR-TASS "officially, no one in the ministry has seen Mitvol's resignation letter so far."
Mitvol is not commenting on the reasons for the resignation.
Mitvol gained notoriety for his highly publicized environmental campaigns against oil and gas projects run by major foreign investors.
