Lisbon Port’s cargo volume hits record

Lisbon's port closed 2007 with the highest annual volume of handled cargo in the last ten years, standing at 13.9 million tonnes, the port's administration APL said.
The 2007 volume showed a year-on-year increase of 9.4 percent.
The good results for the past year reflected mainly the traffic in the dry bulk, containers and ro-ro segments. The dry bulk traffic through the port rose by 10.9 percent, while that in the container and ro-ro segments went up by 9.4 percent and 4.3 percent respectively.
The container traffic amounted to 5.7 million tonnes with the TEU traffic exceeding 550,000 units for the first time. The dry bulk traffic stood at 5.6 million tonnes with cereals through the Silopor da Trafaria terminal registering a 91.2 percent surge.
The cargo traffic on the Tagus river alone marked a 50.4 percent growth, reaching 770,000 tonnes.
