The move comes after feeder operators serving Chennai withdrew their surcharge following berthing and productivity improvements at the container terminal operated by DP World.
The 16 member lines of the IPBCC said they will continue to monitor the situation at Chennai.
Meanwhile, the local Container Shipping Lines’ Association urged the port authority to allocate more space to the Dubai company in a bid to reduce capacity constraints at the terminal.
The lines said there is no doubt that volumes through the terminal will continue to rise as India’s economy grows, and therefore every effort must surely be made to ensure that the terminal’s capacity and productivity are increased still further.
Chennai handled a record of more than one million TEUs in 2007, up from 830,000 TEUs in 2006. PSA-Sical, a joint venture of Singapore’s PSA International and Chennai-based Sical Logistics, is developing a second box terminal at the port; the new facility is expected to be ready by the end of the year.
