The seaports in northeast Liaoning province handled 5.7 million TEU in 2007, up 22.6 per cent year on year. Overall tonnage of these ports rose 15.8 per cent to 413 million tonnes, Xinhua reported.
Last year, throughput of the province's port of Dalian exceeded 200 million tonnes while port of Yingkou's throughput exceeded 100 million tonnes.
The director of Liaoning Communications Department Zheng Yuzhuo expected throughput to surpass 6.2 million TEU or 460 million tonnes by the end of this year.
Mr Zheng said the province plans to invest CNY7 billion (US$968.7 million) this year on port facilities. During the five-year period from 2006 to 2010, the province will invest a total of CNY64.3 billion on expansion projects, bringing 147 new berths with a capacity of 320 million tonnes.
