11 India's ports to go on strike from 16 July
Port and dock workers in 11 ports of the country will go on strike from 16 July after talks between representatives of workers' unions and transport and shipping minister, Mr TR Balu in New Delhi failed today.
Today's meeting was held to evade a deadlock between the government and the workers, whose demands included 13.5 per cent interim hike in pay effective from January 2007, increase in bonus, inclusion of 50 per cent dearness allowance (DA) in the basic pay and filling up of vacant posts among others, a Press release issued by All India Port and Dock Workers' Federation said.
Following the failure in talks, the strike will start from 15 July midnight, the statement said adding that employees of the officers' cadre will also participate in the strike.
