Canada’s transport minister Lawrence Cannon has cleared funding of up to C$42m (US$37m) for 386 projects, at 101 ports, aimed at enhancing security at Canadian ports and marine facilities. In addition the government is inviting applications for further funding of port security projects will receive funding under the Marine Security Contribution Program, and that Transport Canada is now accepting applications under the program’s next round of funding.
"Security is important to Canada’s New Government," said Mr Cannon. "We are taking steps to address priority security needs in our transportation system to help ensure it remains secure and efficient. This funding will give ports and marine facilities the opportunity to make improvements to security, so they can be better equipped to address potential terrorist threats."
The latest spending round is part of a five-year, C$115m programme to help helping Canada’s ports and marine facilities to modernise and strengthen their security systems and programmes.
