Eurogate marks 40-year record of 33,333,333 containers

Today marks a new container handling record for Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg - over the past 40 years, 33,333,333 containers have been handled by the terminal.

The last container comes from the United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) and will be loaded today onto the container ship Al Safat, which is employed on the UASC AEC2 service between Asia, Europe and the Middle East.

Eurogate is celebrating the handling of the 33,333,333rd container together with UASC and its customer Siemens.

"33,333,333 containers - that's an impressive figure that we could never have imagined back in 1970. Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg has since then grown into a modern, technically efficient terminal capable of handling the world's mega container vessels. Now, we are working towards the 44,444,444 mark," said Thomas Eckelmann, chairman of the Eurogate Group management board.

UASC has been a customer at Hamburg for 11 years. The first UASC ship, the Al Sabahia, docked at the terminal in April 1999. Since then, Eurogate has handled 1.5 million TEUs for the shipping line.

The first container on the current Eurogate site (formerly Eurokai) was handled back in 1970. That was the start of the steel box's triumphant advance. Only 10 years later, in 1980, the container handling volume reached the 150,000 TEU mark. By 1990, the container handling volume on the present-day Eurogate site had as much as tripled, exceeding 490,000 TEUs, and by 2000, another 10 years later, more than doubled. Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg achieved its record handling performance in 2008 with 2.7 million TEUs. The economic crisis caused the handling volume to decline again in 2009, however, to 2.1 million TEUs, comparable with 2004. In the meantime, container volumes in the port of Hamburg are rising again.
