Riga Port’s throughput down 1.9% in Jan-Aug., to 19,7m tons

Eight-month freight traffic volume via the port of Riga (Latvia) fell 1.9% from the same period last year, to 19.707 million tons, The Free Port of Riga Authority said.
In the reporting period the volume of dry cargo shrank by 13.9%, to 11.233 million tons, liquid bulk cargo - by 6.7% to 4.114 million tons, while transshipment of general cargoes surged by 64.5% to 4,350 million tons.

In Jan-Aug., transshipment of coal and petroleum products rose by 38% and 20.8% respectively, the largest share of the total freight turnover at the port. Timber cargo increased by 15.8%, container volume was up 8.3%, fertilizers – by 4.8%.

Free Port of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava (Western Dvina), the total area of the port is 6.348 ha, length of berths – 13.818 m, maximum draft of vessels at berth – 12.2 m. Transit cargoes make up 80% of overall freight traffic, carried to / from the CIS countries. In 2009, the Port of Riga posted a 0.5-percent gain in freight volumes, to 29.72 million tons.
