Freight traffic passing through the Big Port of St. Petersburg in January-August 2010 rose by 14% compared with the same period in 2009, to 36 million 945.3 thousand tons, the Port Authority statistics said.
Container throughput during the reporting period amounted to 1,205,884 TEUs. The volume of bulk cargo fell 1.8%, to 10,670,300 tons.
The Port of St. Petersburg is located on the islands of the delta of the Neva river, in the Neva Bay, the eastern tip of the Gulf of Finland. The Big Port of St. Petersburg territory includes the Neva River delta and the Neva Bay, Kronstadt and a dam structures complex. The Port of St. Petersburg operates a fleet of Icebreakers escorting merchant vessels during winter navigation. According to the Port Authority there are at least 30 stevedores currently operating at the port. In 2009, the port’s trade flows reached 50.4 million tons, 21.619 ships called at the port (10.786 inbound and 10.833 outbound).
