The increase in ferry traffic through the port of Aktau in general is a consequence of reviving economic activity and trade between countries, as well as the efforts to attract additional cargo in the international corridors passing through the port, the port’s press service said.
In 2010, container traffic jumped by nearly 3 times thanks to increased volume of transit nonmilitary cargo to Afghanistan. The number of transported containers in 2010 totaled 9,445 units.
Port of Aktau is located on the east coast of the Caspian Sea and is the only seaport of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The Port is a gate for international trade flows passing via its terminals, a broad range of dry cargoes, crude oil and petroleum products. In 2009 the Aktau Port’s throughput rose by 26.7%, to 13,951,000 tons. The rail ferry service launched at the port last year carries rail cars and containers on Aktau-Baku line.
