Container traffic at 3 Ukraine’s ports up 21% to 621,100 TEUs
The total volume of containers handled at the ports of Ilyichevsk, Odessa and Mariupol (Ukraine) in 2010 grew by nearly 21% as compared with 2009’s figures, to 621,100 TEUs, the of Ministry of Ukraine's infrastructure press service reported citing the operational data of the State Service of Maritime and River Transport of Ukraine (Ukrmorrichflot).
The port of Odessa transshipped by the end of 2010 about 1,200 containers, which did not pass through the ports of Ukraine in 2009. Furthermore, the port of Kherson has started handling containers in pilot mode. In November 2010, the monthly volume of handled containers reached about 35 containers, and from April 2011 the port expects to boost container throughput to 70 units a month.
The container throughput increased thanks to Ukrmorrichflot’s recent initiatives aimed at reducing the time for processing and handling containers and to introduction of a 50-percent discount on containers handling at the ports of the country.
