The volume of handled cargo by the port of Liepaja (Latvia) in 2010 remained at the last year's level and amounted to 4.38 million tons, PortNews reported citing the Liepaja Port Authority.

Transshipment of grain cargo declined by 21% to 1.41 million tons, crude oil volume fell by 26.8% to 123,900 tons, while shipment of petroleum products rose by 3.3% to 382,200 tons, handling of forest cargo soared 61.5% to 889,300 tons. The annual volume of black metal shrank by 16.7% to 444,600 tons. The number of calls dropped by 87 units to 1366 ships.

Port of Liepaja was founded in the 90s of last century at the former Soviet Union’s naval base. Today it ranks the third port in Latvia by freight traffic volumes. Half of the port’s cargo throughput is fueled by crude oil and bulk cargoes imported from the CIS countries, largely from Belorussia. In 2009 the port’s throughput increased by 4.6%, to 4.38 million tons.
