Kotka port’s throughput soars 50.5% to 11,3m tons

Freight traffic through the port of Kotka (Finland) in 2010 surged by 50,5% as compared to 2009, to 11,315,800 tons, the Kotka Port Authority press release said. The port’s container throughput increased by 14.8% to 397,275 TEUs. There was a significant decline in the segment of Ro-Ro cargo - by 39% to 14,867 units.

The port’s strong results were fueled by exports volume - 6,113,600 tons, a 47-percent surge from 2009’s figure. Imports demonstrated a 2.35 times growth to 2,842,000 tons.

In December, the port of Kotka handled nearly 1,056,100 tons of cargo.

Port of Kotka is one of the main export ports in Finland, which is part of a logistics hub, which enables trade flows between Finland and Russia. The basis of freight turnover of Kotka port is timber and products of local pulp and paper plant.
