Alexei Klyavin elected president of ASC

General Meeting of the Association of Shipping Companies (ASC) held on January 13, 2011 elected through absentee voting Alexey Y. Klyavin President of the Association, ASC’s Board Chairman Rishat Bagautdinov said in an interview with PortNews.

Nikolai Smirnov, who had been the ASC President since the Association foundation, at his own request was appointed Vice-President of ASC.

ASC was formed on 25 February 2004 and now comprises the majority of Russian shipping companies. In 2009, the operators, members of the ASC transported 27,8 million tons of export cargoes, including 13,3 million tons overseas and 14,5 million tons by short sea vessels with transshipment to larger ships. The Association members are also the largest engineering offices, research and design offices and the industry’s educational institutions.

The Association aims at independent development and maintaining the rules and standards of business practices and relationships with customers, as well as non-judicial mechanisms for resolving disputes between the members of ASC and their customers.

The Association cooperates with the Russian State Duma and the Federation Council, the federal and regional executive authorities. The Association has signed cooperation agreements with the Russian Ministry of Transport and the Federal Agency of Sea and River Transport. The organization has also defined the rules of interaction with the Federal Service for Transport Supervision.
