Long Beach 2010 container throughput up 23.6 percent to 1.2 million TEUs

Container volume at the Port of Long Beach in 2010 increased 1.2 million TEUs, or 23.6 percent over 2009, the largest one-year gain in the port’s history.
Long Beach, the nation’s second-largest container port after neighboring Los Angeles, said the 1.2 million-TEU increase was the largest increase reported by any U.S. port last year. The port handled 6.3 million TEUs in 2010.
Long Beach regained much of the 1.4 million TEUs it lost in 2009 during the global trade recession. The port’s 2010 volume was still about 1 million TEUs less than in 2007, when volumes peaked at 7.3 million TEUs.
Imports in 2010 rose 23.4 percent from the previous year and exports were up 15.6 percent.
December marked the 13th consecutive month of growth compared to the same month the previous year. Long Beach’s total volume last month was up 12 percent over December 2009. Imports increased 10.4 percent and exports were up 14.7 percent.
Container volumes were strong throughout 2010. Although trade growth is expected to continue in 2011 as the U.S. economy rebounds, the monthly gains will be compared to unusually strong growth during the same months in 2010 so year-over-year growth may return to single digits.
Los Angeles, the nation’s largest container port, last week reported its total container volume in 2010 was 7.8 million TEUs, up 17 percent from 2009.
