Hamburg Sud stops Philadelphia chassis service

Hamburg Sud North America, joining the push by ocean carrier to narrow equipment services, said Monday it will stop providing chassis to shippers moving containers with merchant's haulage through Philadelphia-area terminals as of Feb. 1, Journal of Commerce reports.

The German carrier said after that date shippers, their agents or consignees will need to procure equipment directly from the Metro Chassis Pool or other chassis providers of their own choosing.

The move is part of an industrywide trend by ocean carriers to stop providing chassis at smaller U.S. ports, which is gradually spreading to all ports across the country and forcing port truckers to find other sources of chassis.

Hamburg Sud said it will continue to provide chassis from the Metro Chassis Pool for carrier-conducted intermodal moves.
