SSME announced on Sunday that it has received a total of six orders for 8,800 TEU containerships on Friday. 1 TEU is the equivalent of one 20-feet container to be loaded on the ship. Four of the orders come from Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), a Swiss-based company, while the remaining two come from Costamare Shipping of Greece.
The new orders measure 300 m in length, 48.2 m in width, and 24.6 m in height, while the average speed is 22 knots. The orders will be delivered in phases from 2013, and the average shipping price is $100 million per ship.
Containerships are known to entail the most meticulous manufacturing processes and tests. As the ships need to maintain a certain level of durability and sailing speed even at greater sizes, it requires a considerably higher level of technology, which has acted as a barrier thwarting new entry by new players.
SSME is also the first company in the world to realize the land-based construction method for shipbuilding. This endowed the company with extra points and allowed it to win the order over other shipbuilding giants in both Korea and abroad, the company explained.
"Our land-based construction method received high marks for the ability to meet a faster deadline, ease in conducting quality tests, and better quality," explained an SSME official.
