Shallow-draft cargo ship passes under the bridges of St. Petersburg
The lead ship of a new series of Volgamax-size dry cargo carriers of project RSD44 "Captain Ruzmankin" (owner Volga Shipping) for the first time sailed under the bridges of St. Petersburg that were not lifted, Volga-Balt’s head Vladimir Nikolayev said. The test sailing started at 1.10pm (MT). The Captain Ruzmankin successfully passed the bridges and berthed at the Big Port St. Petersburg.
"This is a new era in navigation on the Neva river", said Vladimir Nikolayev in an interview with PortNews commenting the experiment. So far, the vessels had to sail along the Neva river in the nighttime, when the bridges are lifted. Now, the new shallow-draft ships will allow significantly increase the volume of freight traffic on the Volga-Baltic Canal and inland waterways of Russia without imposing additional restrictions on the transport and residents of St. Petersburg, Vladimir Nikolayev said.
