New Vietnam terminal receives first Maersk ship

Maersk Line kicked off its service at the recently opened Cai Mep International Terminal in Vietnam when the Grete Maersk called there Tuesday as part of its trans-Pacific service, the Journal of Commerce reported.

The new terminal, which was built by a joint venture between the Vietnam-based Saigon Port, Vietnam National Shipping Lines and APM Terminals, opened last March, serving Ho Chi Minh City, 50 miles upriver.

The Grete Maersk is one of the ships on Maersk Line’s TP6 service from China to Los Angeles. Ships on the TP6 service began calling Vietnam last year at the nearby SP-PSA International Terminal in Vung Tau before the Cai Mep terminal opened.

The terminal has a 46-foot channel depth and a 54-foot depth alongside its berth. It has 90 acres of container yard.
