IHI unveils 10,000 teu LNG-powered containership
IHI Corp announced on Wednesday it has developed a 10,000 teu containership capable of running on liquefied natural gas (LNG) on top of the conventional heavy fuel oil, Seatrade Asia online reports. The IHI proprietary technology allows the LNG tanks to be small so as to maximise container transport capacity.
The containership produces virtually no sulphur oxides and emits 80% less nitrogen oxides compared to a ship powered by bunker fuel, according to IHI.
Japanese firms Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha are also developing vessels that can run on LNG.
