Archangelsk port cargo volume sinks 6 percent to 2.95m tons
Cargo throughput of Archangelsk port in January-August 2011 decreased by 6% compared with the same period a year earlier, to 2,950,400 tons, the Arkhangelsk Port Authority said. The volume of foreign trade rose 10% year-over-year, to 1,879,200 tons.
Eight-month volume of imports increased by 2.6% to 388.100 tons. Exports rose 12.1% to 1,491,100 tons, while the volume of exported paper, paperboard and woodpulp remained unchanged y-o-y, 59.600 tons. Shipment of coal fell 3.7% from last year’s figure to 167.900 tons. Handling of exported petroleum products increased by 29% to 857,600 tons, export of timber decreased by 2.4% to 338,700 tons. The volume of short-sea shipping increased by 29% to 857,600 tons.
In August, cargo traffic at the port increased by 16.8% to 637,000 tons. Monthly volume of imports plunged 43.3% to 33,300 tons, while exports gained 7.9% to 292,200 tons. Short-sea traffic volume shrank by 32.4%, to 174, 400 tons.
The year-round navigable Port of Arkhangelsk is located in the delta of the Northern Dvina River flowing into the White Sea. Cargoes transported via the Northern Sea Route are passing through the port’s terminals. The port’s stevedoring companies handle a broad range cargo: general, cellulose, cardboard, containers, timber, metals, fertilizers and heavy-lift cargo, suction and grab cargoes. Port of Arkhangelsk capacity allows handling up to 4.5 million tons a year. In 2010, freight traffic at the port increased year-over-year by 30.1% to 4.5 million tons.
