MSC to rely more on transshipments on Europe, Indian Ocean, Australia loop
Geneva's Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) plans to replace its North Europe-Indian Ocean-Australia direct links, part of its weekly inter-continental pendulum service, by transshipment services via Antwerp, Gioia Tauro, Singapore and Balboa, Shippingazette reports.
A direct Med-Indian Ocean Islands-Australia service will be retained and combined with the westbound leg of MSC's Asia-Middle-Med Falcon service, reports the Paris-based maritime consultancy Alphaliner. The North Europe-Indian Ocean islands trade and the North Europe-Australia trade will henceforth be offered through transhipment at Gioia Tauro in the southbound direction.
The Indian Ocean islands-North Europe northbound trade will continue to be served as usual through transshipment at Durban.
The northbound Australia-North Europe trade and northbound Australia-Med trade will be covered through transshipments at Balboa and Singapore. However, the final pattern remains to be confirmed by the company.
In North Europe, MSC will add a dedicated feeder to connect Le Verdon and Bordeaux to Antwerp (on top of the existing Biscay Bay feeder services), thus continuing to cater efficiently for the France-Indian Ocean islands market, including the coverage of La Reunion, a French overseas territory.
After the MSC move, the only remaining direct services between North Europe and Australia will be the Europe-Australia-Asia (NEMO/EAX) service offered jointly by CMA CGM and Hapag-Lloyd, which connects North Europe and the Med to Australia via Suez, and the Europe-US-ANZ Pendulum via Panama offered jointly by CMA CGM and Marfret (PAD).
