JAPAN's shipping group NYK performed an anti-piracy drill with the Royal Australian Navy and in a separate exercise with the Hong Kong Police, carried out an anti-terrorist scenario on an NYK-owned vessel, Shippingazette reported.
The NYK Venus of 8,600-TEU capacity was used in the exercise with Hong Kong Police Special Duties Unit called to dispatch high-speed boats and helicopters to the vessel to find and subdue pirates and terrorists.
During the drill, employees at NYK's head office in Tokyo, NYK Line (Hong Kong) and NYK Shipmanagement were able to reconfirm their roles for rapid response in dealing with acts of terrorism, including information exchanges with the police and other related organisations.
During August its joint drill with Australian navy using its NYK-owned containership, ACX Diamond of 2,800-TEU capacity in an escort training exercise with a naval frigate while sailing along the east coast of Australia. This is the fifth joint exercise that the NYK Group has conducted with the navy since 2007.
During the exercise, the frigate provided an escort for the containership, and the two vessels worked on VHF communication. The escort ship will soon begin assisting the US-led Combined Task Force 151 in security patrols for pirates off Somalia.
