Cosco Busan to pay $44m civil penalty for 2007 spill
The owners and managers of the Cosco Busan are to pay $44.4m in settlement for the vessel’s 2007 collision with the San Francisco – Oakland Bay bridge, Seatrade Asia Online reports.The civil settlement covers the costs of environmental damage and the resulting clean caused by a bunker spill from the vessel and requires Regal Stone and Fleet Management to pay $44.4m.
"This Bay is the jewel of the San Francisco region and the Cosco Busan oil spill left a lasting scar across our water, natural habitats and wildlife," said State of California department of justice attorney general Kamala Harris. "This settlement will allow all of these precious resources to be restored to their original health and beauty."
