Russian Railways’ year-end box traffic to be around 2.4 million TEUs, official says
By the end of this year, RZD network container traffic will exceed 2008’s numbers, to some 2 million 480 thousand TEUs, the state monopoly head said Wednesday.
Since 2012, container shipments will climb an average 10 percent a year, RZD President Vladimir Yakunin said speaking at the IV International Transportation Conference, "St. Petersburg - the Sea Capital of Russia. Transport and Transit Potential."
However, according to the official, the level of containerization still remains low and can be boosted by shifting loads from maritime to rail transport, but this will require developed railways infrastructure and increasing the rolling stock.
