Russian Govt sets aside RUB 20bn for nuclear-powered icebreaker
Russian Government allocated in the budget for the next three years RUB 20 billion for construction a new generation nuclear-powered icebreaker, Minister of Transport Igor Levitin told the 2nd International Forum on the Arctic development.
Russia’s newbuilds projects include construction of one nuclear and four diesel-electric icebreakers. The final decision on the issue was slated for October: it’s still not clear whether the icebreakers order will be awarded to a tender winner, or the shipbuilder will be officially approved by the President’s order. United Shipbuilding Corporation will likely become the official contractor.
Russian nuclear icebreakers are operated by FSUE Atomflot of the State Corporation Rosatom.
