Ventspils Port's nine-month throughput up 12 percent to over 21 m tons
Cargo traffic at Ventspils Port rose 12 percent year-over-year, to 21.21 million tons, the Port Authority said.
In the reporting period liquid bulk volume increased by 9 percent from a year earlier, to 11.35 million tons. Handling of bulk cargo was up 13 percent to 7.95 million tons, while general cargo volume surged by 30 percent to 1.92 million tons, the Port Authority's spokesperson Inga Ievina told LETA.
The nine-month gain was fueled by increased transshipment of coal, oil products and fertilizer. The port's coal throughput surged by 72 percent from January-September 2011, to 4.64 million tons, shipments of oil products grew by 11 percent to 10.95 million tons. Handling of mineral fertilizer rose 4 percent 1.99 million tons of mineral fertilizers.
In Jan-Sept., the port handled 1.39 million tons of rolling cargo, a 48 percent surge year-on-year.
In September, Ventspils Port loaded/unloaded 2.24 million tons of cargoes, a 43.5 percent growth from last year's figures. Monthly volume of liquid bulk totaled 1.17 million tons, 849,000 tons of bulk cargo and 213,000 tons of general cargo.
