Port of Singapore cargo volume climbs 6.8 percent

Freight flows passing through the port of Singapore in January-September 2011 totaled 401,308,000 tons, a 6.8 percent gain as compared with last year’s numbers, the provisional data of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore said.

Crude oil shipments during the period increased by 8.1 percent to 142,258,200 tons.  

Container throughput of the port rose by 4.8% to 22,257,800 TEUs. In September, the volume of handled containers increased by 7.9% to 2,410,200 TEUs.

Singapore is the city-state located on an island in the South-East Asia. Port of Singapore is the world's busiest port in terms of total shipping tonnage. Singapore also transships a fifth of the world's shipping containers as the world's busiest container port, half of the world's annual supply of crude oil, and is the world's busiest transshipment port. In 2010, cargo throughput of Port of Singapore totaled 502 million tons.
