Permanent border check point in the port of Ust-Luga is likely to be opened in January-February 2009, Head of the North-West Customs Department Mikhail Prokofyev told Friday according to RBC.
Multi-purpose port being built in Ust-Luga is located practically on the border between the Russian Federation and the European Union. The port’s water area, which is 16 m deep together with a short approach channel (3.7 km) make the port of Ust-Luga to be the only Russian port on the Baltic Sea capable of handling dry-cargo vessels of up to 75,000 tonnes in deadweight and tankers of up to 120,000 tonnes. The second approach channel is to be built by 2010 to provide rotation of vessels.
