Plans for new $300-million deepwater container terminal on the Strait of Canso gets green light

Approval has been given to a company that wants to build a new $300-million deepwater container terminal on the Strait of Canso.
According to the Chronicle Herald, Melford International Terminal has been awarded conditional environmental approval for the much-hyped plan.
The project, which includes an intermodal rail facility and a 600-hectare logistics park, is expected to commence by 2011. It would have capacity for about 1.5 million TEUs by 2015.
Melford had to submit a surface water management plan that includes sediment and erosion control measures; and emergency spill prevention. It also had to prove it could protect wildlife habitat and wetlands and monitor air quality and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.
Proponents maintain that the terminal will be the closest North American mainland port to Europe, Asia and the Indian subcontinent, via the Suez Canal.
