The SSBN Alexander Nevsky left the docks of Sevmash Shipyard on Saturday for shipbuilder’s sea trials, the Severodvinsk city administration said.
The nuclear-powered missiles submarine will undergo her systems tests, including life-support systems of the ship and the crew, performance characteristics.
The Alexander Nevsky is the first serial ship of Borey class submarines of Project 955. The forth generation vessel was designed by St. Petersburg-based Central Design Bureau “Rubin". The submarine crew was formed in the Russian Pacific Fleet and trained on the lead ship of the Project 955 Yuri Dolgoruky.
The Alexander Nevsky keel was laid on March 19, 2004 at Sevmash Shipyard. The submarine was completed in six years. The Vladimir Monomakh, the third serial vessel of the Project 955 laid down in 2006, is scheduled for commissioning in 2012.
Severodvinsk-based shipbuilding company PO Sevmash was established in 1936. Since 1939, the enterprise has built 45 warships, 163 submarines (128 of them nuclear-powered). The company also has built more than 100 civilian vessels of various types and purposes (tugs, mini-bulk carriers, pontoons, barges, fish farms) for international customers. Sevmash Shipyard is focused on construction of vessels for the Arctic oil and gas development projects.
