APL to impose Asia-Europe peak surcharge

Singapore-based container carrier APL is imposing a peak-season surcharge on westbound trade from Asia to North Europe and the Mediterranean, the Journal of Commerce reports.

The planned surcharge, starting Dec. 28, will be $200 per 20-foot equivalent unit, APL India said in a trade notice.

The move follows similar PSS announcements by other major container ship operators covering Asia-Europe-Mediterranean trade lanes.

Recent surcharge notices include: $200 per TEU by United Arab Shipping Company as of Dec. 16; $225 per TEU by Hapag-Lloyd as of Dec. 19; $200 per TEU by Maersk Line as of Dec. 26; $225 per TEU by Zim Integrated Shipping Services as of Dec. 26; and $225 per TEU by Mediterranean Shipping Company as of Jan. 1, 2012.
