Rotterdam sign an agreement with Brazilian port Suape

The Port of Rotterdam Authority has signed an agreement with the port of Suape near Recife in the northeast of Brazil. During the next 18 months, the Port Authority will be involved in drafting a masterplan for the coming twenty years. At the same time, discussions are under way with the port authorities and government of the federal state Pernambuco on what form a partnership between the Port Authority and the port of Suape near Recife could take.
The agreement is a consequence of President Lula’s visit to the Netherlands in April.
The initiative is in line with Port Authority policy on the further internationalisation of operations. The Port Authority is already involved in the development of the port of Sohar (Oman) and last month announced that it would be taking a serious look at Borneo (Malaysia).
Suape is very interesting for the Port Authority, due to its massive potential. Over 3000 ha are available for port expansion, surrounded by thousands of hectares for distribution activities, the construction of a refinery and the chemical industry. Some 80 companies have already set up business and there is plenty of interest – also from renowned international concerns. In terms of location and depth, Suape is very well placed to develop into an interesting container port.
