Singapore consortium to develop Brunei hub

A Singapore consortium has clinched a deal to develop a port and industrial hub in Brunei, the Straits Times reported.
Surbana International Consultants and Global Maritime and Port Services have been appointed consultants for the detailed master plan and consultancy services to turn Brunei's Pulau Muara Besar into a port-based trading and industrial area.
The 955 hectare site is currently a low-lying island in the Brunei Bay at the mouth of the Brunei River.
The plan is to develop a modern deep-water container terminal, export processing zone and manufacturing hub with supporting commercial facilities and services.
A bridge linking the island to Muara town will also be constructed.
Global Maritime executive chairman Goon Kok Loon, a former top executive at PSA International, said his company's extensive expertise in developing master plans for ports will complement Surbana's experience in township master planning, reclamation and infrastructure development.
The Surbana consortium clinched the deal in an international tender conducted by the Brunei Economic Development Board.
The first phase of a container port involving a 660-m long quay capable of handling at least 800,000 boxes a year is scheduled for completion by the end of 2012.
