Toledo Port Authority mulls new container terminal

The Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority is planning the development of a new marine container transshipment terminal at the Port of Toledo.
The Toledo Free Press reported that a strategic collaboration agreement was signed by the port authority, UT and Midwest Terminals Inc. and the Melford International Terminal for the container port project located in the lower Great Lakes.
Melford is a Canadian company spearheading the Atlantic Gateway Initiative project on the Strait of Canso in Nova Scotia. It envisions Toledo as an inland sister port to Melford's international terminal.
"Toledo is one of several strategic ports for a container-shipping terminal and intermodal logistics park," Melford CEO Bob Stevens told the Free Press.
The port has a strategic location due its existing intermodal distribution network of sea, air, rail and road transportation, a manufacturing base and exporters shipping products abroad.
Toledo has the largest land mass and is the sole port on the lower Great Lakes that has space for an additional container shipping terminal.
The port authority has 230 acres of waterfront land formerly owned by Chevron and Toledo Coke. Bids are ongoing for the road, water and sewer infrastructure needed for development.
The port authority plans to purchase modern, multipurpose cranes for the Port of Toledo to improve its container handling capabilities.
Plans are underway to expand freight warehousing and logistics activities at the Norfolk Southern intermodal terminal in South Toledo as well as improved customs capability at Toledo Express Airport.
