Osaka's foreign container trade falls 2.1pc

Japan's Port of Osaka saw its foreign trade containers fall 2.1 per cent in July compared to the same month a year ago to 163,901 TEU, according to figures released by the Osaka municipal government.
Within this total, imports were up 0.7 per cent year on year in July to 94,733 TEU, while exports dropped by 5.8 per cent to 69,168 TEU.
Foreign trade containers handled during the January-July period contracted by 2 per cent to 1,105,037 TEU, as exports decreased by 3.4 per cent to 490,153 TEU and imports fell by 0.8 per cent compared to the same period a year earlier at 614,884 TEU.
The port handled about 3.26 million tons of foreign trade cargo in July, up 1.4 per cent year on year. Exports increased slightly by 1.2 per cent to 1.05 million tons, while imports grew marginally higher at 1.4 per cent to 2.20 million tons.
Within this total, the ports containerised exports to the United States plummeted 29.3 per cent in July to 67,352 tons, while containerised imports from the US shrunk by 1.5 per cent to 63,242 tons, reports the Journal of Commerce Online.
In the first seven months of the year, containerised exports to the US amounted to 538,099 tons, falling 13.9 per cent over the same period a year ago, while imports from the US dropped 8 per cent to 468,280 tons.
