South Korea’s Hanjin Shipping and the United Arab Shipping Co. (UASC) have formed the Asia Europe Container Service 1 (AEC 1).
It will run with 10 container ships from Jawaharlal Nehru Port in India to European ports including Antwerp, Thamesport, Hamburg and Rotterdam.
S.H. Lee, managing director of Hanjin Shipping India Pvt. Ltd, the Indian unit of the South Korean firm, acknowledged that market conditions were not favourable for all carriers, but added: “The new service was something that was planned a long time ago and not something that has happened overnight.”
Hanjin and UASC currently run container shipping services from India to the US east coast, the Mediterranean, the Far East and West Asia.
