"This subject is not limited to physically expanding facilities. Mexican ports have to incorporate the industry's value chain into their business model," he added. To underline this point, Mr Pastrana referred to the tender call placed on September 2 to build a vehicle-specialised terminal at Lázaro Cárdenas port in Michoacán state.
"We believe that, in addition to the storage area, this project should include areas to assemble auto parts or apply labels, for example," he said. "This involves making improvements in ports logistics and modernising connectivity to include other means of transport, mainly railroads and highways," the official said.
This point flows from a suggestion by ruling party congressman Alejandro Delgado that Mexico needs improve its railway infrastructure to support the development of its port industry.
