Hong Kong October port throughput slips

Container shipping volumes handled by Hong Kong's ports in October declined 2.9 percent year-on-year to two million (TEUs), Xinhua reported.
The Kwai Tsing container terminal, where the bulk of Hong Kong's shipping traffic is handled, recorded throughput of 1.56 million TEUs in the month, up 3.7 percent from a year earlier.
Operators at Kwai Tsing include Wharf (Holdings) Ltd's Modern Terminals and Hutchison Whampoa's Hongkong International Terminals.
Other cargo-handling areas recorded throughput of 440,000 TEUs in October, down 20.7 percent from a year ago.
In the first 10 months of the year, local ports handled a total of 20.58 million TEUs, up four percent year-on-year.
Of the total container throughput during the 10 months, 15.13 million TEUs were handled by the Kwai Tsing container terminal, up 5.2 percent year-on-year, while other cargo-handling areas handled 5.45 million TEUs, up 0.7 percent.
