In January-October 2008, the port of Murmansk handled 23.18 million tonnes of cargo (+11.3%, year-on-year), the port informs. In the reported period, transshipment of dry cargo amounted to 16.7 million tonnes (+27%, year-on-year), liquid bulk cargo – 6.4 million tonnes (-15.4%).
According to PortNews IAA, Murmansk Commercial Seaport OJSC accounts for 50.3% of the port’s throughput. In the reported period, Murmansk Commercial Seaport handled 11.67 million tonnes of cargo (-0.9%). The share of off-harbor transshipment complex Belokamenka made 24.2%. In January-October 2008 Belokamenka handled 5.62 million tonnes of cargo (+2.2%, year-on-year). Other 13 stevedoring companies of the port accounted for 5.9 million tonnes of cargo (25.5% of the port’s total throughput).
The port of Murmansk is situated on Kola Peninsula on the coast of Barents Sea. The port is the world's largest located behind polar circle. Murmansk is the most northern of ice-free ports of Russia. Depths on approach fairways which extent makes 22 miles are big that ensures availability of the port to any vessels.
