Throughput of St. Petersburg port up 3% to 5.4 mln t in October 08

In October 2008, the port of St. Petersburg handled 5.398 million tonnes of cargo (+3%, year-on-year), Administration of the Big Port of St. Petersburg SUE reports.

In the reported period, transshipment of dry bulk amounted to 874,100 tonnes (+6%, year-on-year) including 60,700 tonnes of ore (+28%, year-on-year), 229,400 tonnes of coal and coke (up 2.1 times, year-on-year), 568,500 tonnes of mineral fertilizers (-14%). Transshipment of loose dry cargo fell by 7% to 31,900 tonnes including 29,100 tonnes of grain (-15%). 

In October the port handled 61,300 tonnes of timber (-61%) and 1.184.8 million tonnes of general cargo (-6%, year-on-year) including 413,000 tonnes of ferrous metal (+8%), 142,600 tonnes of non-ferrous metal (-6%), 57,800 tonnes of scrap metal (-49%%). Transshipment of packaged goods totaled 81,900 tonnes (+12%, year-on-year), refrigerated cargo - 266,000 tonnes (-20%), other general cargo - 223,500 tonnes (+7%). The port’s container throughput amounted to 180,697 TEUS (+28%). Transshipment of oil cargo – 1.579.8 million tonnes (+15%%). The number of calls – 6,334,7 units.

Port of St. Petersburg is located on the islands in the mouth of the Neva-river, in the Neva Bay at the eastern side of the Gulf of Finland (Baltic Sea). The Big Port of St. Petersburg includes the mouth of the Neva-river, the Neva Bay, Kronshtadt and the complex of structures protecting St. Petersburg from flood (the dam). Icebreaker assistance is carried out within winter navigation. According to the Administration of the Sea Port of St. Petersburg, about 30 stevedoring companies are engaged in transshipment of cargo in the port.
